how do I find my first job in the TV Industry

I have recently finished my HNC in Media Production Technology, and found that non-linear editing is the way I want to go. I have a showreel of my work and I don't really know what to do with it. Should I send it to production companies. Can anyone out there give me any advice or even work experience in this field.

Get something like the BFI Handbook (usually available from the MOMI bookshop) and mail every relevant company listed, it even lists a contact name (well, the 1994 edition does).

I got some experience at Planet24 by doing that. Made me realise I really didn't want to work in TV!!

Unless you have a track record, you may have to start by making the tea.

I also found that employment prospects were seasonal and sexist. This was around 1996.

What you can do is get hold of a trade publication that has a section in the back which lists projects currently in production (In Australia we have IF or FilmInk) and often the production company associated with them.

Give these prod. companies a call - work experience, whatever and it'll give you a bigger chance of actually getting work on a production as opposed to working in an office.

I've had over a years experience of working in a TV station (small cable station in Cambridge, UK).

I'd heard they were looking for volunteers so I applied. I WAS lucky, and managed to catch the right person at the right time and in the right mood. She let me just come in and start helping!

Anyway, I've left over a year later with experience in Camera, Editing, Vision Mixing, Lighting, Sound, Set design, Production, Pre-production, SCRIPT WRITING, SHOW PROPOSALS, ETC...

If you are in the UK, try doing the same at RedTV (Channel 8).
The only downsdie is that it was UNPAID.
